In severe cases of leg swelling, especially when venous stasis ulcers are present a outpatient remedy is available using Unna boot compression therapy. The Unna boot has been used for almost 200 years. A zinc oxide impregnated gauze wrapping is applied for up to a week. This therapy promotes healing while decreasing the swelling. Results are often dramatic. At PVA, we are always looking for better treatments, but proven and inexpensive traditional treatment modalities remain a valuable part of our practice.
