Lois A. Fiala, M.D.

Vascular Surgeon and Endovascular Specialist

A vascular surgeon for over 20 years, Dr. Lois Fiala was the first female vascular surgeon to practice in the city of San Antonio. But her arrival to town was no coincidence.

Dr. Fiala has a Bachelor of Science degree in biological sciences from the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, Nebraska. She completed her medical degree at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Services in Bethesda, Maryland. Dr. Fiala completed both her internship and residency in general surgery at Madigan Army Medical Center in Tacoma, Washington. Dr. Fiala rose through the ranks serving her country as a physician practicing at various military medical facilities. During her 18-year military career, Dr. Fiala served as a General Medical Officer with the 125th Medical Detachment at Camp Red Cloud, Korea, and as a Staff General Officer and Chief of the Surgery Service at Fort Riley, Kansas. Dr. Fiala served four years as Chief of the Peripheral Vascular Surgery Service at Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston, in San Antonio, Texas. In 2015, Dr. Fiala became a part of PVA and has since then dedicated her time to serving the vulnerable and underserved communities throughout Bexar County.

Dr. Fiala belongs to a number of professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, American Medical Association, American College of Surgeons (Texas Chapter) and San Antonio Vascular Society. She is board certified in general surgery and vascular surgery by the American Board of Surgery.

To date, Dr. Fiala is one of two female vascular surgeons to complete a vascular surgery fellowship at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington D.C.  Soon after completing that fellowship, Dr. Fiala became the first female Chief of the Peripheral Vascular Surgery Service Department at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC) at Ft. Sam Houston. That is when Bexar County and South Texas gained not only the expertise, but also the passion of an individual who is moved by helping patients with debilitating vascular diseases.

Dr. Fiala saw a need in San Antonio, where vascular disease is most prevalent and has devastating effects on patients, to share her knowledge, skills, and compassion with patients throughout South Texas.

As a vascular surgeon, Dr. Fiala has the capabilities and training to cover the entire spectrum of treatment; ranging from conservative patient management, endovascular intervention with balloons, wires, and stents, to open surgical procedures such as bypass or endarterectomy, and even a hybrid approach, a process that combines both endovascular techniques with open surgery practices.

Please note: Dr. Fiala will be moving to a new practice, Texas Cardiac & Vascular Specialists, on 12/1/23. Her office will be located at 718 Lexington Avenue, San Antonio, Texas 78212 and their phone number is (210) 420-8671. If you would like to be seen at her new practice, please contact PVA for a medical release form to transfer your records.
